Cadmium red light uses the pigment PR108 Cd(S,Se). It is the synthetic Cadmium zinc sulfoselenide with up to 30% selenide. Since 1840, it has been one of the most popular red colors among artists. Matisse was happy to paint large surfaces with the color.

The light cadmium red, which is more bright and durable than cinnabar red, was first produced in the 1920s and after it was marketed, it did not take long before cinnabar red returned. The color has not only proven to be a good substitute but has also shown coloristic properties that surpass cinnabar red.

During the same period (1920s) it was also preferred by most artists instead of Cinnabar (vermilion), which had the dull tendency to contain mercury and posed a greater health risk. In portrait painters, color has also taken its place on the palette instead of redheads. It goes from being semi-comprehensive to comprehensive. Our version is comprehensive. In accelerated tests, it is known that the color is very lightfast even with high UV exposure, humidity and temperature fluctuations.

The curing time of the paint is relatively long compared to e.g. soil colors, but conversely a fraction of the curing time of cinnabar. Now that we’re on the subject, we do not use siccativ (quick dryer) to harmonize the curing time across our range of artist paints. It compromises the quality of the pure simple paint, and causes preservation problems in paintings on it (cracking for example). However, a professionally trained artist who knows what he / she is doing can advantageously mix a little siccative into the paint.

Cadmium colors are a group of colors that are primarily in the spectrum from yellow to orange to red. The pigments in those colors all have an unsurpassed good lightfastness and are used diligently by many artists around the world.

This oil paint can and must be mixed with oil paints from other manufacturers. The same goes for paint. Since this is such a chemically pure and simple product without mysterious fillers, it must also be mixed with your own favorite paint, whether it is Dammar and linseed oil, stand oil, black oil with litharge, Liquin ™, Oil gel ™ Maroger, lavender spik eoil, etc. Too good control over consistency and detail work, we recommend our own paint. If you use solvents to clean brushes outdoors or in a ventilated room, Gamsol ™, turpentine, Terpenoid ™ Alcohol and ethanol, etc can be used. If, on the other hand, you do not like solvents, you can use special cleansing soap or liquid brown soap for the same purpose.

toxicality
Cadmium red light is toxic and must not be eaten or otherwise ingested. The product has not been allergy-tested, but if you only use it for its intended purpose – to paint with a brush and palette knife – there is no immediate health risk.

All cadmium pigments are toxic but only dangerous by inhalation of the pigment in powder form. Dissolved in linseed oil, like tube dyes, they are harmless unless you put them in your mouth.

This colour is known internationally as: Cadmium Red Light | Kadmiumrød lys | Rouge de cadmium claire | Rosso di cadmio chiaro | Kadmiumrot hell
