As a painter, you can use the colour in many contexts, not least landscape painting, where its natural character and high opacity make it unsurpassed. Many famous painters have used chromium green here including: Monet, Renoir, Seurat, Van Gogh, and Cézanne. The name “chrome” has given this color a bad reputation among many artists, as it brings to mind chrome yellow and the green colors produced by this unsustainable colour. Quite unreasonably, the color has never quite gained the popularity it deserves, but it demands attention not least because of its durability, but especially for its many coloristic merits. Although its color tone and clarity are a bit muted, it gives an immensely good effect in some contexts.

Chromium green is a color that contains the pigment PG17 (Cr2O3). It is a synthetic inorganic pigment which in practical layman’s language could be called olive green. The substance otherwise occurs naturally as a crystal, but extremely rarely. Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin invented the pigment in 1798. But it was not until 1838 that Pannetier & Binet in Paris began producing the pigment. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, it is designated – of the green pigments – which is most chemically stable. It also explains why it is used on an industrial scale for everything else that has nothing to do with artist colors. Eg. the glassmaking of green wine bottles, plastic products, bricks, fired ceramics, painting of military equipment, as well as printing ink for banknotes.

This oil paint can and must be mixed with oil paints from other manufacturers. The same goes for paint. Since this is such a chemically pure and simple product without mysterious fillers, it must also be mixed with your own favorite paint, whether it is dammar and linseed oil, stand oil, black oil with litharge, Liquin ™, Oil gel ™ Maroger, lavender spike oil, etc. Too good control over consistency and detail work, we recommend our own paint. If you use solvents to clean brushes outdoors or in a ventilated room, Gamsol ™, turpentine, Terpenoid ™ Alcohol and ethanol, etc can be used. If, on the other hand, you do not like solvents, you can use special cleansing soap or liquid brown soap for the same purpose.
