Ivory black, PBk9 is an organic pigment. It was originally obtained by carbon / coal deposition and soot on burnt ivory. About 20% became pure carbon, the rest became dark and colourfast phosphates with carbon ions. But luckily for elephants, their tusks quickly became too expensive to purchase. The dye was then made from soot from burnt skeletons from other animals that were either self-dead or were waste from slaughterhouses. This is how it still goes, and the result is different than just using coal dust retrieved from a mine. To avoid Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, however, skulls and spines from animals are no longer used. But otherwise, virtually nothing has changed. In all its simplicity, it is still about adding a minimum of oxygen to the burn so that it smokes and soots as much as possible.

Ivory black is the most common and most durable of all black oil paints. Other black colours are fine, but tend to bend into the cold blue, which can be quickly seen by blending titanium white. The advantage of ivory black is that it is more neutral. It is also slightly on the warm side, without being brownish like (lamp black). That is why it is a variety we want in our range. The pigment is very stable chemically and lightfast. However, it is less comprehensive than e.g. Mars black of iron oxide, but unlike Mars black, ivory black is far better suited for oil paints, and Mars is unsurpassed in acrylic paints. Ivory black has been the preferred black for Rembrandt, Velázquez and Manet and remains one of the important colours on the palette of professional artists.

This oil paint can and must be mixed with oil paints from other manufacturers. The same goes for paint. Since this is such a chemically pure and simple product without mysterious fillers, it must also be mixed with your own favourite paint, whether it is dammar and linseed oil, stand oil, black oil with litharge, Liquin™, Oil gel™ Maroger, lavender spikeoil, etc. For good control over consistency and detail work, we recommend our own paint medium. If you use solvents to clean brushes outdoors or in a ventilated room, Gamsol™, turpentine, Terpenoid™ Alcohol and ethanol, etc can be used. If, on the other hand, you do not like solvents, you can use special cleansing soap or liquid brown soap for the same purpose.
