Description
Sets of earth tones oil paints have a high content of pigment, pure linseed oil, and without solvents. The consistency is like butter at room temperature. With this set, you get 5 earth colours with different properties plus a titanium white (not earth) to mix the earth colours with.
All our earth tones belong to a large group of natural or synthetic pigments that can be either red, brown, yellow, greenish, or black. Common to them all is that they contain iron oxides as a colouring agent. They are all lightfast, non-toxic, and base-resistant. The natural iron oxide pigments often referred to as earth tones, are found throughout the world and are among the most common oxide minerals in the earth’s crust.
The oldest traces of man-made art that testify to the use of earth colours are found in prehistoric cave paintings. It was the hunters of the tribal cultures who created the images during the last ice age 10,000 to 30,000 years ago. The images of the Stone Age hunters represent their prey: reindeer, bison, and mammoths. They are painted with earth tones, mineral colors, soot or blood smeared on the rock sides using the fingers, pieces of bark, or reeds that made out of brushes.
More recent testimony to the use of earth colors is our domestic folk painters who primarily used earth colors, especially because they are very resistant. The color pigments of these furniture painters were made from different types of earth, such as ocher and umbra.
Burnt Umber, which is included in our color set, is one of the most important colors in oil painting. It is an excellent color for underpainting as it dries quickly and therefore can be overpainted immediately after. The color is preferred by many artists over ivory. The reason for this is that the earth pigment, which has reddish and yellow undertones, can be mixed with ultramarine blue to get an intensely deep black.
To create a warm or cool shade, simply add either more burnt umbra or ultramarine. Another reason to use burnt umbra instead of black is that the color is more transparent. It can be used to create transparent, quick-drying shadows in the underpaint.
These tubes of oil paint can and must be mixed with oil paint from other manufacturers. The same goes for paint medium. Since this is such a chemically pure and simple product without mysterious fillers, it must also be mixed with your own favorite paint medium, whether it is dammar and linseed oil, stand oil, black oil with litharge, Liquin ™, Oil gel ™ Maroger, lavender spike oil, etc. Too good control over consistency and detail work, we recommend our own paint. If you use solvents to clean brushes outdoors or in a ventilated room, Gamsol ™, turpentine, Terpenoid ™ Alcohol, and ethanol, etc can be used. If, on the other hand, you do not like solvents, you can use special cleansing soap or liquid brown soap for the same purpose.
